On 17 September 2026, the University of Jaffna took a step towards deeper academic ties with Germany. In collaboration with the DAAD Information Centre – Colombo, the International Collaboration Cell (ICC) and the Career Guidance Unit (CGU) held two information and awareness sessions on study, research and international collaboration with German universities.
Building Partnerships with German Universities
The day began at the Faculty Board Room, where university leadership gathered for a session titled “Cooperation Projects and Funding with German Universities.” Those present included the Vice Chancellor, Deans of the Faculties, the ICC Director and Faculty Coordinators, and representatives of the CGU, along with Research Assistants, the Senior Assistant Registrar and the Manager of the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Office.
The session was led by Ms. Nimaya Manudewa, Regional Officer of the DAAD Information Centre – Colombo. She outlined how research collaborations with German universities can be established and introduced the DAAD funding schemes that support cooperation projects. The discussion gave the Deans and coordinators a chance to consider where future partnerships might take shape.

Study and Research Opportunities for the Next Generation
The second session, held at the Library Auditorium, was aimed at early-career researchers and other interested members of the University community. It was especially relevant for third- and fourth-year undergraduates, postgraduate students, doctoral candidates and junior staff with a Bachelor’s qualification. Around 30 participants attended.
Ms. Manudewa spoke about Master’s studies and PhD research in Germany, along with the DAAD scholarships and funding available, including eligibility criteria and application pathways. A dedicated question-and-answer segment let participants raise their own questions about studying, researching and securing funding in Germany.
A Personal Journey
The students also heard from one of their own faculty. Dr. K. Sarveswaran, Senior Lecturer Gr. I in the Department of Computer Science, shared how his path to Germany began with a summer school programme outside Germany. There he met German academics and built professional relationships with lecturers and professors. Those connections later shaped his opportunities for further study and research in Germany, including his PhD and his experience of applying for a DAAD scholarship.
His story gave the session a practical perspective and showed students how one opportunity can lead to the next.
Looking Ahead
The sessions reinforced the University of Jaffna’s commitment to international academic partnerships, research collaboration, academic mobility and professional development. Further information on DAAD scholarships and opportunities in Germany will be shared with participants.

We thank Ms. Nimaya Manudewa and the DAAD Information Centre – Colombo for their time and insights, and everyone who attended for their enthusiasm and engagement
